Pelvic floor muscles have many important functions that are essential for our well-being such as maintaining continence, supporting pelvic organs/lumbar stability and sexual function. We need to maintain proper strength, length and control of these muscles to avoid dysfunction.
Pelvic floor dysfunctions can be caused by hypertonicity where muscles of the pelvic floor are tight. Whereas hypotonicity is defined as weakness of the muscles of the pelvic floor resulting in stress and urge incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. Many people think that this is a normal part of the aging process but this is NOT the case and these symptoms can be reversed and improved upon with the direction of one of our pelvic health physiotherapists.
Pelvic Health Physiotherapists have advanced training in this area of specialization to assess the pelvic floor function through an internal evaluation of the vagina and/or rectal tissue. Further examination of the low back, hips and sacroiliac joints are completed since these joints can directly stress the pelvic floor musculature. Pelvic health physiotherapists offer the first line of defense, often eliminating the need for invasive surgical procedures.
